Recreational Pilots Licence RPL

Recreational Pilot Licence (RPL)

This is the page where you will find everything you need to know about getting your Recreational Pilot Licence (RPL). A Recreational flying Licence is defined as a flight crew licence which allows you to fly a light, single engine aircraft as the pilot in command; without supervision and without a flying school.

If you are looking to attain your recreational flying licence or if you’re a student pilot who wants to carry passengers, then this information is for you.

With your Recreational Pilot Licence from PathFinder Aviation, you will be able to fly a four-seat craft (up to 1,500kg) within 25 nautical miles of your base. Attaining a Recreational Pilot Licence is the dream of many of our students, and we provide an affordable and achievable pathway to do this. Read on for recreational pilot requirements.

How to Apply for a Recreational Pilot Licence

You need to be over the age of 16 to get your Recreational Pilots Licence, and you must complete the relevant flight training with us at PathFinder Aviation. CASA (the Civil Aviation Safety Authority) dictates the following conditions for attaining your recreational pilot licence:

  • Undertake a general English language assessment
  • Pass an RPL theory exam
  • Pass your RPL flight test through recreational flight training
  • Have at least 25 hours of flying time, including a minimum of 20 hours dual and five hours as a pilot in command

At PathFinder Aviation, we provide one of the lowest cost pathways for you to get your Recreational Pilots Licence. We want to see you achieve your flying dreams and know that a low Recreational Pilot Licence cost makes flying solo that much more attainable.

If you are looking for another kind of certification, we also offer low-cost pathways to Pilot Certificate, navigation, Private Pilot Licence and commercial pilot licences at Archerfield.

How Much Does a Recreational Pilot Licence Cost?

At PathFinder Aviation, you don’t have to pay upfront for your lessons, and we provide you with all of the briefing materials for you to go over at home. That way, when you come in for your flying lessons and briefing, you’re going to be prepared. Each lesson is fixed price in either our Piper Tomahawk aircraft or a Cessna 172

At PathFinder Aviation, the lesson price you see is the price you pay. We don’t charge extra for GST, landing fees, fuel charges, Air Service charges, credit cards, headset hire or consumables.

If you already hold an RA Aus pilot certificate you can upgrade to a CASA RPL in 8-10 lessons. Every flying hour you conduct in an RAAus registered aircraft can be used to meet the requirements for the CASA-issued Recreational Pilot Licence (RPL).

Learn Safety in the Air

At PathFinder Aviation, we believe in teaching real safety when instructing you on how to fly for your recreational pilot licence.

If you learn the correct things to do (and what not to do), you will be safer in the air and on the ground. Learn about:

Plane in an open field.
  • Safe flight planning
  • Fuel planning
  • Assessing the weather and reading forecasts
  • Performing pre-flight checks and inspections of the aircraft
  • Aircraft knowledge
  • Communication and radio procedures
  • Error management and threat management
  • Ensuring your preparedness and suitability for every flight you take

You will learn about how to make the best decisions when you learn – remembering that take-offs are optional, while landings are mandatory. Or, what goes up must come down.

After you complete every flight with us, we’ll go over what worked and what needs to be worked on.

We will give you open communication about safety, incidents and potential problems as this is critical to the safe operation of your aircraft. Open communication about safety is critical to every pilot – no matter their experience and skill level. If you have trouble admitting your faults or shortcomings, then flying lessons may not be for you!
